Standing In This Place by Rachel Carter

Some highlights from the first two years of the Standing In This Place project by sculptuor Rachel Carter. The project features a series of community workshops engaging a variety of people in arts and crafts connected to the cotton mill trade , exploring the connections with the slave trade in the Americas and Caribbean. This resulted in an exhibition in Artcore , Derby of a series of embroidery hoops with the designs produced by participants.

The centrepiece of the project is a public sculpture of two women in embrace being installed into Nottingham’s Green Heart public park in early 2025. In a couple of the images we see the two women preparing for their embrace to be recorded in a photogrammetry rig , which will create the data which the final sculpture is built upon.
