Owen’s Place
“A hero is someone who has given their life for something bigger then themselves” – Nottingham Casuals RFC.
Walking along the Beeston Canal I came across this quote on one of the signs at Owen’s Place – a memorial to Owen Jenkins who tragically died back in July this year having successfully saved a girl who had got into the weir.
It’s encouraging to see that the memorial has been very well looked after even four months after the tragedy with ribbons and flowers looking fresh and very tidy on the back fence to the Heritage Centre. Purple flowers and ribbons , chosen as Owen’s favourite colour adding a vibrant touch to the concrete landscape.
The spot itself is one I’m very familiar with , having visited on quite a few photowalks , most recently back in March and I knew the concrete bank could get very slippery due to the silt and mud deposited and it’s good that access to it has been blocked off.
